"The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government." - George Washington's Farewell Address, September 17, 1796
The right to self-determination is the principal upon which this country was born. Voting is a means of exercising and protecting that principal. As our nation struggled to establish its identity, many lives were dedicated to the preservation of this principal in various ways. Some felt strongly enough to serve in the United States Military Service to insure that the legacy of freedom and liberty lived on, and to this day there are those who feel it their duty to continue to support people’s right to self-determination.
The Colorado Secretary of State established the Vote in Honor of a Veteran Program in 2002 to honor those who have served and those who continue to serve this country in military service. On November 3, 2009, Election Day, Vote in Honor of a Veteran by wearing a personalized button to the polls declaring your appreciation for the specific contributions of a particular U.S. Service Member or Veteran.
